There's something weirdly enjoyable about listening to an Irishman talk about U.S. Military defense strategy.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all get along and put this money into education instead?

I'm so old, I can remember when they said it was impossible to build such a system. Now they are quibbling over timeframes.

15:31 the United States might develop Star Wars/star citizen/no man sky/ star field, technology BEFORE GTA 6

Brilliant breakdown of a mind-bogglingly complex system. The fact that the "Golden Dome" requires defeating missiles before launch fundamentally changes the game, pushing defense into space. The financial cost is staggering, but the geopolitical cost of weaponizing space could be even higher. Really well explained.

styropyro probably has a few old lasers lying around that the military could borrow, though I'm not sure they'd be ready for such a massive upgrade

The longest peacetime period in U.S. history without a major war involving large-scale U.S. troop deployment is generally considered to be: 1865–1898 (33 years).

Man, I worked as an engineer in the defense industry for 7 years and took grad courses in radar systems and related, and this was SO spot on. From the details of how phased array radars work, the materials used to the more global system level approach of how these pieces work together.

I used to work on this stuff every day so it's kind of nostalgic honestly lol. I'm not one for war but the technology behind radar defense systems is awesome, and it genuinely does save lives every day. But what's also true is this stuff is EXPENSIVE. Defense contractors do not spend money very carefully and costs very often get bloated. When your customer has infinite money from citizens that have little say over how their money is spent, you don't need to be very careful, you just need to win the contract.

Pov aliens coming to earth:
Scout: "sir it seems like they have quite advanced weapons on the ground and in space, I wouldn't go any closer or they might attack"
Captain: "good observation but you missed one detail, for some reason all the weapons are pointed at themselves and even firing at themselves"

Kind of crazy humans turned rocks and sticks into this.

9:20 VERY important clarification. Detonating explosives next to a nuclear weapon WILL NOT cause sympathetic nuclear detonation. Nuclear warheads require incredibly well-timed detonations of their explosive lenses to actually detonate.

Edit: To be clear, Brian didn't say it would do that, but I just wanted to clarify because it's a common misconception that nuclear bombs can be accidentally triggered by other explosives.

Can't wait to see what a "Diamond Dome" will be capable of.

So, if a missle is intercepted over the USA and explodes. Does that mean it will be a Golden Shower?

Aliens are gonna be hella confused in 1000 years, when they show up and see we've constructed a giant Dyson sphere around the sun only to power weapons pointed at our own planet.

I'm glad we're supporting mom and pop business like Lockheed Martin in these tough times
