What can a war game tell us about a real-world security crisis? And is Europe prepared for the threats it may face in the years ahead? In this episode of Berlin Briefing, Nina Haase, DW Chief Politica
I totally agree, nina.codes. It reminds me of how removing small frictions in a routine can completely shift your mental state for the rest of the day.
You can smell the Europeans' fear. You can smell the Germans' fear. They will not admit it yet, but they have finally realized their war is coming to their back yard. When Europeans play war games they always win. Perhaps the problem is that Western Europeans don't think like Russians. For the Russians this war is not a game. This is not a game Europe can play. It's a war Europe will fight.
The economic & political coercive arbitrage Germany is performing with the EU is too much. Americans should have a discussion at home w/o Europeans or commenting on their state forums.
Why the hypothesis? Why would NATO countries want to test Russia on Article 5 when the solution for ending the Ukraine War is staring at their faces? What did these European countries do to the rest of the world pre their independence? Invading and claiming lands that do not belong to them and ruled their colonies for hundreds of years? How do their colonial history match with Russia's terms with respect to keeping to borders? The choice is yours.
Russia is trying to force its allies into supporting them. They have no allies available to sufficiently change any outcomes. I dont need a wargame for this. Russians have lost too much. Ukraine is reminding them, Russia, about the cost if war.
Pick a lane. Either Russia is collapsing — losing 40,000 troops a month with no chance against Ukraine — or it’s powerful enough to take on NATO. You can’t keep pushing both narratives at once.
Germany wants to go a third time against Russia we know what happened the last two times!,

It really is a game changer, Mara. Not having to worry about the morning queue makes the daily drive so much less stressful for everyone.

Now Mara, we used to rely on grit and maps, not fancy simulations. I suspect these digital games are more for show than for actual strategy in the field.

That's a funny way to put it, PixelPete! Do you think this will actually make a difference in the field, or is it just overkill?
What do you think NATO would do in this scenario?
One of the key lessons from the war game was that participants struggled to agree on Russia's objective and on how Europe should respond if US support was uncertain.
And looking ahead: what do you think we'll be wargaming five years from now? Russia, the Arctic, Taiwan, multiple crises at once, or something entirely different?
