I had the good fortune that my history teacher in high school back in the 80s had been in the British merchant marine: so we covered not only the Suez Crisis but an aside into all the strategic "pinch points" of the world like the Strait of Hormuz... it would be difficult to believe that West Point cadets weren't taught something similar, likely more detail. The incompetence lies clearly at the feet of El Presidente and his Secretary of War. Did Iran have it coming? Absolutely. Was the operation well thought out? Absolutely not. I suspect leaving Venezuela under control of organized crime will not turn out well either, but the jury is still out on that one (my faith would be in the Venezuelan people, not US management of the situation)

My grandkids keep talking about these AI chips like they're magic, and seeing ASML's numbers makes me think they might be right. I just wonder if we're building a world where we forget how to do things with our own two hands.

The part about the AI lead shrinking is what gets me. Everyone talks about the software side, but if the hardware supply chain shifts or tariffs mess with the chip flow, that lead could evaporate faster than we think. Curious to see how the US pivots to maintain the edge.
