I had a career as a police dispatcher. After 20 years, I left to be a nurse. After 7 years, I need to get my bachelor’s in nursing. I’m trying to get in to Arizona State University because they have an online astronomy program. Man, I’d love to totally get what he’s saying.
This was a fascinating reminder that some of humanity's greatest breakthroughs came from realizing that two things that seemed completely unrelated were actually the same thing viewed from a deeper level. Newton unified heaven and earth. Maxwell unified electricity and magnetism. Einstein unified space and time.
What stood out most was Don Lincoln's point that discovery requires two things at once: imagination and criticism. The creative leap is important, but so is the willingness to relentlessly test your own ideas and expose them to scrutiny.
That's a lesson that reaches far beyond physics. Progress happens when people are humble enough to admit they might be wrong and curious enough to keep searching anyway.
The line that stuck with me was: "We all agree your idea is crazy, but is it crazy enough?" History is full of ideas that sounded impossible until someone proved otherwise.
As someone writing the Hero's Journey Adventure Series, this conversation really resonated with me. The best adventures aren't just about exploring distant places—they're about exploring ideas that challenge how we see reality.
Lincoln has sparked my interest in learning about particle physics with his Subatomic Stories podcast during covid lockdown. I've learned a lot about the principles and although I don't understand the math, it has motivated me to learn more about math and other sciences as well. I'm grateful for that!
