The industry pollutes our fjords, employs hardly anyone, and its owners have decamped to Switzerland to dodge their taxes.
"Norway's New Oil" is kind of a wrong title. This industry only benefits ultra-rich owners who are currently moving to Switzerland to get tax benefits. So does it benefit the people of Norway? Just the company tax and employee tax income. Owners won't share their insane income and move abroad to a tax haven.
It is an important industry here in Norway, but we need stricter environmental regulations in many fjords because the amount of waste produced by fish farming is too high in several areas. Moving more of the industry onto land, farther offshore, and possibly farther north, where the water is colder and there are fewer parasites and diseases, would benefit everyone, although it would increase production costs slightly.
Introducing stricter environmental requirements while reducing taxes for companies that comply would be a simple way to help the industry transition.
