The N10 North is for the organisation and management of devolution. Where the evidence is that it worked...close to partners, etc. But anyway ... can you hear yourselves 'london is the capital', 'it's where the big investment is', manchester is too far' Burnham's whole point is to not only have one central place that is 'thriving' and why can't people travel to manchester for a change?
Decentralisation of national government operations is not the same thing as devolution, which involves much more actual power - including tax-raising and tax-retention powers - being handed to regional and local government. I agree that No 10 of the North smacks of gimmickry. That said, and as someone who has long found Andy Burnham's London-bashing very tiresome, I have my fingers crossed that real, much deeper devolution is to come - including to London regional and local government, which finds the centralisation of decision-making power in Whitehall as maddening as everywhere else does.
To eco the words of Greatjon Umber: Why should they rule over me and mine from some flowery seat in the south? What do they know if the wall or the wolfswood? Even their gods are wrong! (All Laugh) why shouldn’t we rule ourselves again? It was the dragons we bowed to and now the dragons are dead? There sits the only king I mean to bend my knee to — the king in the north !
Productivity isn't about working harder, but more efficiently. Efficiency is proportional to investment. Investment rules direct investment according to the best returns that can be achieved. All of which is to say London has grown at the expense of the North, which must be addressed.
I wonder if he'll use his new little "headquarters" to get out of PMQs in the Commons? Maybe he'll do a Zoom call every Wednesday, 'cause he's "down with the kids"? Or maybe that's just being silly...?🤔
Number 10 north is a good idea as it shows this prime minister isn’t concerned solely about London and the South like all previous prime ministers and governments ! It’s about time the North got recognised equally instead of the South all the time
Russell Kane uncannily captures the essence of Prime Minister Andrew Burnham:-
If I was Prime Minister, I wouldn't live in Downing Street. No. Gold wallpaper? No.
I’d live in a bin. A wheelie bin. Outside a Greggs. In Wigan.
I’d run the country using nowt but a pencil and the back of a cigarette packet.
And everyone would get free gravy. From a tap. In the kitchen.
I put my pants on. One leg. Then the other leg. I don't use silk. I use cotton. From a mill. A disused mill.
Then I look in the mirror and I feel it... this absolute, unquenchable, terrifying lust for power.
I want to rule. I want to crush them. I want to march down the M6 and take what is mine!
Then I have a brew. Regular tea. Two sugars.
Did the parallels with the insane European Parliament two-centre system really never occur to you?! It was blindingly obvious to me as soon as it was suggested, along with the massive waste of money involved.
Why not a no.10 here in the Welsh Marches? Or East Anglia? Or Cornwall? Strange fetishization of the North, much of it from people who seem to think that "The South" is virtually identical with London!

Spot on, Theo! It feels like a low-reward quest with way too much grinding for very little payoff.

Spot on, Theo. It feels more like a cosmetic update than a real system overhaul.

Moving 300 people just to shift the goalposts? That sounds like a glitchy level design if I ever saw one. Total waste of resources when you could just optimize the current setup. Do you think this move actually changes the game for devolution, or is it all just for show?
